Best wings in town. They come at a premium. I get flavor to the bone so I am thinking they are marinated. Then smoked. Then flash fried. I do their dry rub. I just prefer dry rub and sauce on the side. It's really good. Like the best in town.

Usually disappointed by bbq places, came here with the family hoping to find a good one. We ordered the family meal: pulled chicken, pulled pork, ribs, brisket, sausage and three sides. We chose cole slaw, collard greens, and the peach baked beans. We also got an order of wings with the dry rub, fries, and one corn bread to try. It was pretty empty on a Thursday night. Therefore service was very quick and the server was friendly. The restaurant is very spacious inside with a smaller room in the back and a decent sized room to the right. We all thought the bbq was tasty. Daughter and I enjoyed the wings. It had a bit of sweetness and saltiness with a nice crisp to it. The pulled chicken was thankfully moist. Many bbq places serve dry chicken. All the meats were tender. The brisket wasn't overly fatty, but was still moist. It was able to satisfy both my husband's and my taste (usually opposite tastes). The ribs had a good amount of meat. The pulled pork was decent, surprisingly a little drier than the pulled chicken. The sausage wasn't bad, but just wasn't my preference. Three sauces were available on the table: hog sauce, vinegar sauce, and sweet heat mustard. The hog sauce is sweet. I liked the mustard sauce best as I don't like things too sweet. Of the sides, the collard greens was my favorite with bold flavors, and it wasn't greasy. The cole slaw was a nice mix of sweetness and tang. Husband enjoyed the mac and cheese. He thought it had the right balance of creaminess and cheesiness. The corn bread was solid with pieces of corn in it. The platter also came with pickle slices and some slices of bread. I appreciated the pickles to break up all the meat. I did think the bread slices were too dry and that's one thing they could definitely improve on: get better bread, something soft and moist. Overall, we thought this was a solid place for bbq and one of the better places in this area. We would return.

The hype is real, Myron Mixon is renown as the "winningest man in BBQ" for a reason - his establishment in Olde Towne Alexandria is good. Located a few blocks away from the main dining establishments of Olde Towne, you have to look for the signage to find it. My buddy and ordered the brisket and baby back rib plate with sides of collard greens and mac & cheese (another veggie in the South) as well as appetizers of dry rubbed smoked chicken wings. All were tasty, moist, and lives up to the hype. Try the meat plain to enjoy the smoke, flavor, and texture - to further enhance the experience try the sauces. Pro: * Great tasty, moist BBQ made to the "winningest man in BBQ" standards Brisket does not snap/break when bent over * Good selection of local brews and cocktails Con: * A bit costly, but it's a renown celebrity BBQ master's restaurant and the portions could be a bit more generous * Parking can be an issue in Olde Towne Alexandria - either park on the street or garage A mainstay on the Food Network's BBQ Pitmaster, Myron Mixon is a tough judge. His BBQ establishment in Olde Towne meets his standards. For great BBQ in the area, drive down to Olde Towne Alexandria and you will not be disappointed. The various rubs and sauces are for sale too.

So it was the last stop before we took the road trip back home and my mom, her Fiancé and my wife haven't eaten. We ended up going with Mixon's because of that Family Meal and the Cupcake Cornbread. So we get here and to be honest the service was shoddy overall. The gentleman that served us was also the greeter at the door so I guess they were short-handed. He didn't even look like he was there to serve, like they plucked him off the street. Another thing sort of service-related was that they really didn't have a drink menu available. I was looking for a cocktail list and the closest I got to that was a list of Eddy's Crushes plastered onto the napkin holder. So I got a Peach Crush - pretty good drink! Back to the service though - the guy kind of vanished while we were waiting for our order and we got a completely different server who just took forever getting back to us whenever we needed something and when we paid. Geez! So the food - it was great! For the family meal, you get a bunch of brisket, a half rack of ribs, pulled smoked pork, pulled chicken, and sausage. Toast and pickles are also in there too. It came with three sides, which were peach BBQ baked beans, Mac n Cheese and loaded potato salad. All were pretty enjoyable. We had the cornbread and that was good as well as two large chocolate chunk cookies which had to be sent back because they weren't heated. Plus! We had 15 wings for 10 bucks in celebration of National Chicken Wing Day! The wings were very good. The ambiance was very casual, almost cafeteria-like with the picnic tables and I get it. This is a barbecue joint and that is the culture. I think there was also an option to order at a counter by the pound but we opted for table service because we saw the family deal. It was almost empty when we got there but then it got pretty packed so these folks have a customer base! Also, the manager was very nice but a little frazzled because it had rained and the women's bathroom as well as part of the restaurant became flooded! She showed genuine concern for us going out there in the heavy rain. So all in all, I would recommend Mixon's for the food and the sauces.. they even have their sauces for sale in bottles. I liked their hog sauce the most but the hit mustard is pretty good too. Just keep in mind that if you go there for the traditional sit-down table service just be patient and if you go on a rainy day, you may need to hold it a little longer.
